Simple and delicious twists on healthy, home-style recipes

Why this recipe?  A fresh sliced tomato, mozzarella, and basil salad is perfect for summertime! This is a delicious twist to the recipe.  I marinated onion slices overnight in a balsamic vinegar marinade, then grilled them on a hot grill. The result was a vertical salad filled with gooey mozzarella cheese!

The Flip:
  • Cut back olive oil.  I knew it was important to keep enough oil to ensure the onions wouldn't stick to the grill—but I successfully reduced the fat by 15 grams!
  • Reduced the amount of balsamic vinegar by a quarter cup—there was plenty to drizzle over the finished salads
  • Reduced the sodium by 1180 mg
  • Cut back the fresh mozzarella to 1/4 inch slices instead of 1/2 inch slices saving approximately 340   calories, 25 grams of fat and 712 mg of sodium!
  • Added an extra slice of tomato

My thoughts:  I loved the subtle smokiness the onions give the salad.

When grilling over medium-high heat, make sure to give the onions enough to time to crisp up for nice grill marks.

Enjoy!

Why this recipe?  Occasionally, I grow tired of lettuce salads, so as I pondered alternatives I realized the farmers markets are filling up with fresh vegetables—that means it's the perfect time to try something new!

This healthy Mediterranean-style salad is so easy to put together that I make mine "to order" at mealtime!  It's delicious and great for the waist-line, too!

The Flip:

  • In the dressing, cut the olive oil by 1/4 cup
  • Used a reduced-fat feta cheese (Mediterranean, tomato basil or plain)
  • Cut back the amount of olives to reduce fat and sodium
  • Substituted honey for sugar
  • Used more herbs to add flavor

My thoughts:
This Cucumber Salad is a perfect topper on a lettuce salad—no dressing needed!

The recipe can easily be cut in half or quartered.  I make dressing ahead of time so it's ready when I need it!

An endless variety of veggies can be used to prepare this salad—use your favorite!  Enjoy

Why this recipe?  With hot weather around the corner, there are outdoor gatherings, and with outdoor gatherings there's Potato Salad—and many of us have experienced potato salad going bad in the heat!  This recipe is a delicious twist on German Potato Salad.  It has a vinegar beef base and no mayo—so it tolerates outdoor heat!

The Flip:
  • Replaced sugar with honey (agave nectar is a good substitute, too).
  • Removed the teaspoon of salt called for in the recipe (over 2000mg of sodium)!
  • Used canned new potatoes for convenience.

  • Rinsed the new potatoes twice to remove as much sodium as possible.
  • Replaced the beef bouillon cube with beef base "Better Than Bouillon"—it has a strong beefy flavor, but it's lower in sodium than bouillon cubes!!!  YUM
  • For additional flavor, I replaced the water with beef stock (I used Kitchen Basic's)

  • Added a small amount of Blue Cheese for additional flavor.  It's optional—use your favorite cheese!
  • Used center-cut bacon (has 30% less fat than regular bacon)

  • Choose fresh green onions to add color and crunch instead of cooking chopped white onions.

My thoughts:  The sky's the limit with potato salad—change the herbs, spices, or cheese to your liking!  However, for a healthier potato salad stick with the vinegar and beef based dressing.

Compared to the traditional mayonnaise based potato salad, one serving of my Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad has half the sodium and WW points!  Dig in!

Why this recipe? My Mother-in-law and her husband served the most wonderful three bean salad during our recent vacation to their home.  Being familiar with three bean salads, I knew there must have been a fair amount of oil and sugar involved.  Still, I asked myself, "can I flip this recipe to make it healthier while maintaining the great flavor of my in-law's recipe?"

The Flip:  To remove as much sodium as possible, I drained and thoroughly rinsed all my canned items.   Choosing black beans in place of the kidney beans lowered the carbs and increased the proteins, which is a good change because proteins help our bodies process (burn) calories more easily.

I replaced the sugar with honey and the oil with extra-virgin olive oil and reduced both by a quarter cup!  After adding Dijon mustard and and basil I had a delicious vinaigrette to pour over the green bean salad.

My thoughts:  I'm ready for Summertime picnics now that I've flipped this Three Bean Salad!  This make-ahead salad is easy to prepare—the hardest part is waiting 24 hours for it to marinate in your refrigerator!  Bulk up your green bean salad with your favorite veggies (I plan on trying cucumbers or waterchestnuts next time).

Flip2Tasty's Green Bean Salad is much healthier and lower in WW points than the average Green Bean Salad—and I can't tell the difference between my version and the original!  I'm sure you will enjoy this if you give it a try!

I couldn't decide whether to call this recipe a salad or a dessert—that's how wonderful it is. A sprinkle of marshmallows and a dollop of low-fat whipped topping completes this Creamy Cinnamon Peach Salad. Thanks so much to my friend, Susan, for the original recipe.  She said it was delicious and I agree!!

I didn't have to do much to flip Susan's recipe, but I made sure any changes I made built on existing flavors. This simple and low-point treat is delicious with all of the melted marshmallows, jello, fruit, and spices it contains.  It is a perfect way to start the New Year!

As with any Flip2Tasty recipe, my family was the first to taste this one. I served them small bowls and waited for their reaction; and to my great pleasure I received empty bowls and requests for second helpings! Try this out as a salad or dessert and let me know what you think by commenting on the recipe!  Enjoy.

I was given this recipe by a good friend, Nancy, who is also watching her weight. These Brussel sprouts are very healthy, low in points, and easy to make.  I've steamed and roasted brussel sprouts before, but this was my first time shredding them!

In my experience, people either love or hate the distinct taste of brussel sprouts.  By shredding the brussel sprouts the seasoning doesn't just sit on their surface, the brussel sprout shreds readily take on the added flavors.  I combined bacon, garlic, and lemon with a few more special ingredients to round out the flavor.

I personally love brussel sprouts, but my son dislikes them.  After trying one bite of my recipe, he served himself a plate and proceeded to eat the entire thing!  He said, "This is the first time I've eaten brussel sprouts and actually liked them!"  I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as he did.

For good luck and a prosperous New Year, add some black-eyed peas to the recipe.  Yum!

Flip2Tasty, my family and I wish you a very Happy New Year!  Thanks for your support!

Do you have a certain recipe everyone wants you to bring to all your get-together's?  This is my most requested recipe from family and friends.  It's just incredible when all the flavor's and ingredients come together!

The homemade salad dressing was in desperate need of flipping.  Too much fat and calories for me!  After a few attempts, I managed to cut the oil from a 1/2 a cup to 2 tablespoons while still maintaining the  flavor profile.  I hope you'll give this Flipped Bacon Spinach Salad a try because it's much better than its original version.  Healthy can taste good!!!

I have so many cucumbers from the garden ready to eat!  I love Grandma's standard cucumber and vinegar recipe (that's her vinegar cruet you see), but what's great about this Oriental Sesame Cucumber recipe it's an entirely different version full of wonderful flavors! Especially the longer they marinate.  Soooo good!

As with any recipe, I encourage you to adjust ingredients to your liking.  I love the flavor of  toasted sesame oil, so I find myself adding a 'dash' more!

Enjoy!
