Simple and delicious twists on healthy, home-style recipes

Why this recipe?    I experienced my first White Chocolate Jalapeno Mousse in Colorado at a small restaurant called the Craftwood Inn.  I must admit, I was skeptical about  the combination of jalapenos and chocolate at first—but it was wonderful! The sweet white chocolate balanced the heat of the jalapenos perfectly while the tart raspberries completed the flavor profile of this unique dessert.

The Flip:  (per serving)
The original recipe:  Calories: 216  Fat: 16g  Carbs: 15g   Fiber:1g  Protein: 3g

The Flip2Tasty version:  Calories: 187  Fat: 12g  Carbs: 13g    Fiber: 1g   Protein: 4g

How?
  • Instead of using whole milk, I used 2%
  • Replaced 50% of the heavy cream with half and half
  • Healthy fresh raspberries are the star of this dessert!

My thoughts:  I cut back on calories, fat, and carbs by treating the mousse as a topping instead of a dessert plated with a sugar-laced raspberry sauce—it's easier to enjoy a decadent dessert when it doesn't add inches to my waistline!

This recipe is perfect for special occasions—it serves 18 people (or 9 if you can't resist)!  Enjoy.

Why this recipe?  Occasionally, I grow tired of lettuce salads, so as I pondered alternatives I realized the farmers markets are filling up with fresh vegetables—that means it's the perfect time to try something new!

This healthy Mediterranean-style salad is so easy to put together that I make mine "to order" at mealtime!  It's delicious and great for the waist-line, too!

The Flip:

  • In the dressing, cut the olive oil by 1/4 cup
  • Used a reduced-fat feta cheese (Mediterranean, tomato basil or plain)
  • Cut back the amount of olives to reduce fat and sodium
  • Substituted honey for sugar
  • Used more herbs to add flavor

My thoughts:
This Cucumber Salad is a perfect topper on a lettuce salad—no dressing needed!

The recipe can easily be cut in half or quartered.  I make dressing ahead of time so it's ready when I need it!

An endless variety of veggies can be used to prepare this salad—use your favorite!  Enjoy

Why this recipe?  Fruit crisp is something I rarely indulge in because of the calories, butter and brown sugar in the topping. It is Flip2Tasty's goal to flip recipes like this so we can indulge a little bit! This crisp is low in points and extremely easy to make—you've got to try it!

The Flip:  Any frozen fruit can be used as long as no sugar has been added to the package.  If you're not sure, check your ingredient label and make sure sugar isn't listed. I used Colorado Palisade Peaches from the Western slope of the Rocky Mountains.  Last summer, I froze an entire case of these peaches!  They're wonderful for baking.

The topping on a average 8 inch fruit crisp is made with about 3/4 cup of brown sugar (160g carbs) and 1/2 cup of butter (92g fat)—yikes!  I made my Peach Crisp topping without adding butter or brown sugar.  My Peach Crisp topping has a yummy crunch in every bite!

My thoughts:  I love making individual servings—it makes it easy to serve and to maintain healthy portion sizes.  An 8 inch pan can be substituted if you don't have four individual oven-safe dishes.  Also, a sprinkle of cinnamon completes the flavor profile!

If you like Fruit Crisp, you don't want to miss this recipe!   Enjoy.

I couldn't decide whether to call this recipe a salad or a dessert—that's how wonderful it is. A sprinkle of marshmallows and a dollop of low-fat whipped topping completes this Creamy Cinnamon Peach Salad. Thanks so much to my friend, Susan, for the original recipe.  She said it was delicious and I agree!!

I didn't have to do much to flip Susan's recipe, but I made sure any changes I made built on existing flavors. This simple and low-point treat is delicious with all of the melted marshmallows, jello, fruit, and spices it contains.  It is a perfect way to start the New Year!

As with any Flip2Tasty recipe, my family was the first to taste this one. I served them small bowls and waited for their reaction; and to my great pleasure I received empty bowls and requests for second helpings! Try this out as a salad or dessert and let me know what you think by commenting on the recipe!  Enjoy.

Cranberry Sauce is essential for my holiday table even though it's not a family favorite.  It was a challenge to create a new version of this sauce, but I think the end result is my best "flip" to date!

It can be difficult when preparing cranberry sauce because cranberries are known for their extreme tartness.  Keeping that in mind, I "toned down" the tart flavor of the cranberries by doubling the amount of blueberries.  It's no longer a cranberry sauce with blueberries—it's a blueberry sauce with cranberries!

I also layered the flavors with natural honey, vanilla, spices, and a hint of orange.  This Honey-rich, Cranberry Blueberry Sauce is made entirely of healthy, fresh fruit—so it's low in points.

The true test was my "meat and potato" husband tasting my final results.  He loved it!  He assured me he'd no longer pass on cranberry sauce!

These Warm Cinnamon Apples just earned a place on my Thanksgiving table!  Apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg come together to form this incredibly delicious and easy slow cooker recipe.  My husband walked into the house and said, "Wow, It smells great in here!" Without a doubt, it tastes even better than it smells.

I love to flip original recipes into healthier, lower point recipes.  However, it's important not to lose a bit of flavor. I cut back on the butter and replaced the sugar with golden honey. Notice how rich the sauce is, both in appearance and flavor.   It's made with the slow cooker juices!

If your reaction is anything like mine, your first bite will leave you thinking you just ate a warm, high calorie slice of apple pie.  It tasted so much like apple pie I couldn't resist photographing my antique Frog pie bird from England!  Pie birds were used to prevent pies from boiling over by venting steam through a tiny hole in the top of the pie bird.

Take the contents of a delicious apple pie, place them in a bowl, and you have my Slow Cooker Warm Cinnamon Apples. Don't forget to add this recipe to your recipe box!  Enjoy.

The original version of this Banana Cake with Fudge Frosting is made from scratch.  It's very time- consuming, includes a lot of butter, and loaded with points.  Absolutely everything I don't want a recipe to be!

I spent the day in my kitchen "flipping" the recipe---tasting and adjusting ingredients to make it healthier, less time consuming, and point friendly!   Most importantly, I kept the banana & fudge flavors the star ingredients of the recipe.  The result is a semi-homemade, moist fluffy cake!

I must say, the frosting stumped me.  It took me a couple of attempts before I was happy.  I succeeded in making a close version of the original chocolate, sugar, milk, two sticks of butter frosting!  I think you'll be amazed with my flipped frosting.

We can have our cake and eat it too, while keeping it healthy!!

I have so many cucumbers from the garden ready to eat!  I love Grandma's standard cucumber and vinegar recipe (that's her vinegar cruet you see), but what's great about this Oriental Sesame Cucumber recipe it's an entirely different version full of wonderful flavors! Especially the longer they marinate.  Soooo good!

As with any recipe, I encourage you to adjust ingredients to your liking.  I love the flavor of  toasted sesame oil, so I find myself adding a 'dash' more!

Enjoy!

I couldn't wait to finish taking this photo so I could sit down and eat.  The word increeeedible immediately came to mind!  Wow, this is a big piece of dessert!  It's hard for me to wrap my mind around something "tasting good" and "being good" for me at the same time!

So girlfriend, this flipped recipe is for you!  (By flipped I mean I took out half a cup of sugar, re-worked Jill's recipe a bit and lowered the points), Take a look...
